Dogs must be registered at the municipal office of your current address if you wish to own a dog in Japan.
Under the Rabies Prevention Law, Rabies vaccination is required to be given once a year.
* We,our hospital, can register your dog and issue a rabies vaccination certificate immediately.
Microchipping on a dog is mandatory. This is required for situations such as transfers to foreign countries where importing/exporting is necessary. Insertion is available at our hospital, please inquire.
After the 3 vaccination shots by about 4 months of age, we recommend vaccinations once a year.
*In Japan, it is sometimes required to provide vaccination certificates at dog runs, trimming salons, pet hotels, and pet friendly accommodations. In cases where a dog cannot receive the mixed vaccine due to health reasons, a blood test for vaccine antibody titer can be performed in lieu of a certificate. The test is an outsourced test, so please allow approximately one week for the test to be performed. **In rare cases, allergic reactions to vaccines may be observed. In such cases, anti-allergy medication will need to be administered, so please try to come in in the morning for vaccinations.
Filariasis is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes that suck blood from dogs and transmit larvae called microfilariae. Microfilariae become adults in about six months and have a life span of about five to six years. The adult parasites in the blood vessels and the heart can cause heart failure, pulmonary embolism, and other problems. Prevention of filariasis is very important due to the fact that the drugs used to eliminate adult worms contain arsenic, which is not available in Japan. Thus the treatment will take several months to several years, and that it can be difficult to cure heart and lung lesions as the disease progresses.
Although there are various types of prophylaxis, based on the mosquito population around our hospital, we recommend monthly doses from around April to December.
The area surrounding our clinic is covered by large parks and rivers, and has a very rich natural environment. Therefore, fleas and ticks often get attached to dogs when walking outside. There are various types of flea and tick prevention medications available, including those that are administered monthly or once every three months, and we recommend year-round prevention.
Trimming at our clinic includes nail trimming, ear cleaning, anal gland treatment, and shampooing with carbonated spring water. We recommend trimming your pet once every month to two months in order to keep its skin and fur in good condition.
Even if there is a gap between trimming sessions, anal gland removal and nail trimming should be done once a month. If it is difficult to perform the treatment at home, please let us know so that we can perform the treatment at our clinic.
We recommend that the surgery be performed before the first estrus, approximately 6 to 8 months after birth. Since there are individual differences in growth, thus the surgery can be performed at other times as well. Before the surgery, blood tests are required. In addition, X-rays and echocardiography may also be necessary depending on the age and general condition.
-Merits
Reduction of stress during estrus.
Prevention of reproductive organ diseases (Female: cysticercosis, ovarian cysts, tumors, etc. Male: testicular tumors, etc.)
Risk of developing diseases related to sex hormones reduced (Female: mammary gland tumors ,etc.Male: prostate disease, perineal hernia, perianal adenoma, etc.)
-Disadvantages
Requires general anesthesia.
Can become slightly overweight.
Baby teeth come in around six months of age. In case of small-breed dogs, baby teeth that are not extracted by around one year of age often remain as residual teeth. This causes tartar buildups and gingivitis. For this reason, we recommend that the remaining baby teeth be extracted under general anesthesia at the time of sterilization.
If you have any questions or concerns about anesthesia or the surgery, please feel free to contact us.
No registration with the local government is required.
Microchipping on a cat is mandatory. This is required for situations such as transfers to foreign countries where importing/exporting is necessary. Insertion is available at our hospital, please inquire.
After the 3 vaccination shots by about 4 months of age, we recommend vaccinations once a year. Similarly to the case with dogs, a certificate of vaccination must be presented at pet hotels and when trimming pets.
It is known that filaria is also a parasite of cats. Cats that go outside have more chances of being infected, so we recommend year-round prevention. Flea and tick prevention is not required for indoor cats, however it is possible for the parasites to be attracted to houseplants and soil in the garden. Therefore, if you are concerned, year-round prevention is recommended.
